About me

Van Gogh Museum - Amsterdam
Just a brief insight into who I am, where I come from, and why I'm teaching. Of course, you can find out lot more by following my blog. This picture was taken at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. I am an art lover, in particular the periods of Impressionism, Expressionism and the later Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein. I have visited Amsterdam on various occasions and always like to partake in the culture.
Teaching

Lexis school, Pyrgos
I obtained my Trinity TESOL Certificate at Sheffield Hallam University in the summer of 2006. No sooner had I completed the intensive month of face-2-face lectures and practice teaching than I was off to Greece. I was terrified, not only was this a daunting prospect in the first place, but I'd missed the Trinity lecture on teaching children. But, despite that, I spent a wonderful first year in Pyrgos teaching 6 classes of children of varying ages and standards. Onward and upward! Four years in Zhuhai, China I think I have finally found something that is worthwhile, and to top it all off, "I quite like this teaching lark," I thought to myself.
Early Years...

Norton Free School badge
In my early years I was a very happy child, my parents gave me every opportunity they could afford and I am very grateful for that. My first school was the fantastic Norton Free - I still recall all of my teachers' names. My secondary school introduced my inspiration for English study, a certain Mr Tipler. His dry humour and obvious delight in the English language is a reminder of where I came from. Image: www.nortonfree.org
Travel

NY from Central Park
From the age of ten I have been blessed with seeing foreign countries as part of the 'family holiday'. Each and every time, be it in France, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy (wherever) I have always left with regret, dreaming of someday returning and maybe staying. That was my motivation for choosing my first location during my brief ESL career, Greece. "A country a year," I dreamed to myself, funny how things never turn out as expected. My second location was Zhuhai - I stayed for three years.
Health

Coarctation of the aorta
Aside from the usual, minor accidents and injuries as a child (broken leg, gash on the head, cut lips, bumps and grazes) I always thought I was in a fair state of health. It wasn't until May 28th, 2000 that we (me and the family) realised that wasn't true. In the evening of the said day I suffered a huge stroke, caused by a congenital heart condition called 'coarctation of the aorta'. I should have been dead. It could have happened any time, any where. Survival is one of my strong points I guess, very useful in this line of work.
