Conversation Classes

Almost every student, if asked, will say that the thing they want most is more speaking practice.  With these powerpoint conversation classes, aimed at students of varying levels (Elementary to Advanced), you can hopefully provide them with the opportunity to talk with you and other students in the class.  Hopefully the lessons have a little something for everyone, and if taught in supportive groups they can advance the standards of lower level students through good peer guidance.  Most of the lessons are in .ppt format, but some of the downloads also involve lesson plans and so are 'zipped'. Some of these lessons are previewed on slideshare - access to the original files can be found here.

The discussions surround internet censorship and the phenomena of 'Big Brother'. Be warned, in countries where censorship plays a central part of that countries policy, conversation may be either heated or simply non-existant through lack of awareness. (contains ppt and lesson plan)

The Changes conversation class develops students' vocabulary and gives them practice using various tenses, modal verbs, and English phrases. 'If' sentences can be studied if necessary for future wishes and expectations.

LEARNING STRAGIES

Picture

The Learning Strategies conversation class includes a twenty-minute presentation, after that it is all student talking.  Thinking of the best ways to learn a language, what strategies to employ, and presenting to the class.

In this conversational game the best strategy is using groups.  These groups can discuss the hot topics, or students can be placed against each other, the one giving the most convincing argument is the winner.  A great way to evoke a need for speaking the language.

SCRUPLES

The Conversation 'Wheel of Fortune' includes 9 categories behind a stunning powerpoint presentation.  Adapt the questions or the topics to your own needs, or just follow the presentation through.  Students will have great conversations with topics they are familiar with, and enjoy the fun element as well.

In this interactive classroom game learners can develop their knowledge of  and all things to with weather, mountains, oceans, continents, and capitals of the world.  Will they choose to bank a simple 25 point question, or risk it and go for the full 100 points.

RIDDLES

In this game students can be put into groups to work out the riddles, alternatively this can be used as a competition for the individuals.  A time limit for each riddle may be necessary.  The real English comes from the students' explanation - only then do they collect points.

This lesson was brought to my attention by a fellow teacher in the school I was in.  Its origins are truly unknown.  However, it is a fine lesson for teaching prepositions, locations and relationships.  Used in the right way (teams score points) it can be an invigorating and useful lesson to the students.
